US – FCC authorizes additional unlicensed spectrum in the 5.9GHz band

The FCC has published new rules that allow unlicensed use of the 5.850 – 5.895 GHz band and is available for indoor Wi-Fi use. The FCC also plans to make further rulings in the future that would allow unlicensed outdoor use of this band.

This band was previously allocated for Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC), for the implementation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) services. The band is now split for:

    • 5.850 – 5.895 GHz for Unlicensed use.
    • 5.895 – 5.925 GHz for automobile safety using Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology.
