US – Unlicensed use of the 6 GHz band

The FCC have released proposed new rules that would allow unlicensed use of the 5.925 – 7.125 GHz band [ET Docket No. 18-295, GN Docket No. 17-183; FCC 18-147].

The proposed rules include protections for incumbent services that also operate in this range. Some sub-bands would only allow unlicensed access points to operate on frequencies determined by an automatic frequency control (AFC) system. Clients would be expected to operate under the control of an access point through the new range.

The proposed rules will also prohibit access-points from operating within moving vehicles (cars, trains, aircraft) or unmanned aircraft systems for the whole range.

Band Frequency Range Restrictions
UNII-5 5.925 – 6.425 GHz AFC required
UNII-6 6.425 – 6.525 GHz Lower power & indoor operation
UNII-7 6.525 – 6.875 GHz AFC required
UNII-8 6.875 – 7.125 GHz Lower power & indoor operation
